iBill vs Wave for Canadian Small Businesses

Both offer a genuinely free plan. The difference is what sits behind the paywall: on Wave, invoice branding and automated payment reminders are part of the $19 USD/month Pro plan — on iBill they are included free, with no credit card required.

The Short Version

Both free plans are real — unlimited invoicing on both sides. This page compares only what each product publishes, and it says plainly where each one is ahead.

Choose iBill if…

You invoice Canadian clients and want your logo and brand colours on invoices, automatic overdue reminders, provincial tax (GST, HST, PST, QST) calculated for you, and quotes, time tracking and reports — all free, no credit card required.

Choose Wave if…

You want automatic bank feeds that import and categorize transactions for you (a Wave Pro feature), built-in card processing without connecting your own Stripe account, or a native mobile experience from a larger, longer-established company.

Either way…

You can start on one and move later. Client lists move between the two by CSV export/import. Invoice history and bookkeeping records don't transfer automatically in either direction, so most businesses switch at a clean date such as a month or quarter end.

What iBill Includes Beyond the Table

iBill is built only for Canada, so the Canadian parts go deeper than a feature checklist shows.

Canadian tax, done for you

GST, HST, PST and QST are calculated from your client's province automatically — the place-of-supply logic is built in, across all 13 provinces and territories — and GST/HST and QST filing reports are generated from your invoices.

Quotes that become invoices

Send a quote, let the client accept or decline online, and convert an accepted quote into an invoice in one click. Recurring invoices and credit notes are included too.

Time, expenses and assets

Track time and bill it straight onto an invoice, record expenses with receipt photos attached, and track capital cost allowance (CCA) on business assets — useful at tax time.

Client portal & accountant access

Every invoice email carries a secure link where your client can view the invoice online — and pay by card there if you've connected your Stripe account. You can also invite your accountant with read-only access to your books.

Where Wave Is Ahead

A comparison you can trust has to run both ways. Here is what iBill does not do today.

No automatic bank feeds. Wave Pro connects to your bank and imports transactions automatically. iBill imports bank statements you download and upload yourself (CSV) — it does not connect to your bank.

No payroll. Neither free plan includes payroll; if payroll is a must-have inside the same tool, iBill isn't it. Payroll costs can still be recorded as expenses so your books stay complete.

No native mobile app. iBill runs in any browser, including on phones, but there is no App Store / Play Store app.

No public API. There is currently no developer API or third-party integration marketplace.

Wave is bigger and older. iBill is a small Canadian-built product. That focus is why everything is free today — and if any of the gaps above are dealbreakers for you, Wave is a solid choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is iBill actually free?

Yes. iBill is currently free and requires no credit card. There is no feature paywall: invoice branding, automated payment reminders, reports, quotes and time tracking are all included.

Is Wave's free plan any good?

Yes. Wave's Starter plan includes unlimited invoices, estimates and bookkeeping records, with dashboard reports. The features Wave reserves for its $19 USD/month Pro plan are invoice branding, automated late-payment reminders and automatic bank imports, per Wave's published pricing as of August 2026.

Can I move my data from Wave to iBill?

Your client list imports into iBill by CSV, and bank statements import as CSV files. Invoice history and bookkeeping records do not transfer automatically — most businesses start their iBill books fresh from a chosen date.

What does iBill not do?

iBill has no automatic bank feeds (you upload bank statements instead), no payroll, no native mobile app (it runs in any browser, including on phones), and no public API. If you need those today, iBill may not be the right fit yet.

Wave is a product of Wave Financial Inc. iBill is not affiliated with Wave. Wave details on this page reflect Wave's published pricing page as of August 18, 2026 and may change — always confirm current plans at waveapps.com. iBill details reflect the live product.
