Ontario HST: 13% tax explained
Ontario's Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) combines the 5% federal GST and 8% provincial PST into a single 13% tax. It has applied to most goods and services since July 1, 2010.
When to Charge Ontario HST
You must register for HST if your business revenue exceeds $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below this threshold, registration is voluntary. See our CRA invoice requirements guide for compliance details.
HST-Exempt Items in Ontario
Some items are HST-exempt in Ontario, including basic groceries, prescription drugs, medical devices, and most health and dental services. Use our invoice generator to create tax-exempt invoices.
HST on Invoices
CRA requires you to show the HST amount separately on invoices over $30. For invoices over $150, you must also include your GST/HST registration number and business name. Learn more about how to calculate GST/HST on invoices.
Common prices plus 13% Ontario HST

Ontario's HST rate is 13%, combining the 5% federal GST with an 8% provincial component. This rate has been in effect since July 1, 2010, when Ontario harmonized its provincial sales tax with the federal GST. The 13% rate applies uniformly throughout Ontario, whether you're in Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, London, or any other city.
Yes, if you're a GST/HST registrant, CRA requires you to show the HST amount separately on invoices over $30. For invoices over $150, you must also include your GST/HST registration number, your business name, and other required details. iBill.ca handles this automatically on every invoice.
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the 5% federal tax that applies across all of Canada. HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) is used in provinces that have combined GST with their provincial sales tax into a single rate. For example, Ontario's 13% HST includes the 5% GST plus 8% provincial tax. Provinces like Alberta only charge the 5% GST, while BC charges GST + PST separately.
Alberta only charges the 5% federal GST — there is no provincial sales tax (PST). This makes Alberta the lowest-taxed province for goods and services. An item priced at $100 costs $105.00 after tax in Alberta.
BC charges two separate taxes: 5% federal GST + 7% provincial PST = 12% combined. Unlike Ontario's HST, BC's two taxes are listed separately on invoices. Some items are PST-exempt (e.g., groceries, children's clothing).
GST only (5%): Alberta, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut. GST+PST: BC (5%+7%), Saskatchewan (5%+6%), Manitoba (5%+7%). HST: Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland (15%), PEI (15%). GST+QST: Quebec (5%+9.975%).
For HST provinces, divide the total by (1 + tax rate). Ontario: divide by 1.13. Nova Scotia: divide by 1.14. For GST-only provinces: divide by 1.05. Example: $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 pre-tax in Ontario.
