How to Reverse Calculate HST

Step 1: Find your province's combined tax rate

Look up the total tax rate for your province. Ontario is 13% HST. BC is 12% (5% GST + 7% PST). Quebec is 14.975% (5% GST + 9.975% QST). Alberta and the territories are 5% GST only.

Step 2: Divide the total by (1 + rate)

Convert the tax rate to a decimal and add 1. Ontario 13% becomes 1.13. Then divide: Pre-tax price = Total ÷ 1.13. For a $226.00 Ontario receipt: $226.00 ÷ 1.13 = $200.00 pre-tax.

Step 3: Subtract to find the tax

Tax = Total − Pre-tax price. From our example: $226.00 − $200.00 = $26.00 HST. This is the correct method. Do NOT multiply the total by 13% — that gives $29.38, which is wrong because 13% was applied to the pre-tax amount, not the total.

Common Mistake

Many people multiply the total by 13% to find the tax. This is incorrect. If your receipt says $113.00, the HST is $13.00 (not $14.69). Always divide by 1.13, then subtract. The calculator above does this correctly for you.

Reverse HST Calculator FAQs

How do I reverse calculate HST?
Divide the tax-included total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. For Ontario (13% HST): Pre-tax price = Total ÷ 1.13. For example: $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 pre-tax, with $13.00 being the HST. For BC (12%): Total ÷ 1.12. For Quebec (14.975%): Total ÷ 1.14975.
How do I remove HST from a total?
To remove HST from a total: (1) Divide the total by 1.13 (for Ontario 13% HST) to get the pre-tax price. (2) Subtract the pre-tax price from the total to get the HST amount. Example: $226.00 ÷ 1.13 = $200.00 pre-tax. HST = $226.00 − $200.00 = $26.00. Do NOT multiply by 0.13 — that gives the wrong answer.
What is the formula to calculate HST backwards?
Pre-tax amount = Total ÷ (1 + tax rate). Then HST = Total − Pre-tax amount. Ontario shortcut: multiply the total by 0.115044 (13/113) to get the HST amount directly. Example: $500 × 0.115044 = $57.52 HST, leaving $442.48 pre-tax.
Why can't I just multiply by 13% to find the HST?
Because 13% was applied to the pre-tax price, not to the total. If a receipt shows $113.00 total, the HST is $13.00 (not $14.69 which is 13% of $113). The correct method is to divide by 1.13. Multiplying the total by 13% gives a number that is too high because you're calculating 13% of a number that already includes the tax.
What is the reverse HST formula for each province?
Alberta/Territories: ÷ 1.05. Saskatchewan: ÷ 1.11. BC/Manitoba: ÷ 1.12. Ontario: ÷ 1.13. Quebec: ÷ 1.14975. New Brunswick/PEI/Newfoundland: ÷ 1.15. Nova Scotia: ÷ 1.14. Use the calculator above to handle any province automatically.
How do I extract GST and PST separately in BC?
For BC (12% total = 5% GST + 7% PST): First get the pre-tax price by dividing by 1.12. Then GST = pre-tax × 0.05, and PST = pre-tax × 0.07. Example: $112.00 ÷ 1.12 = $100.00 pre-tax. GST = $5.00. PST = $7.00. The calculator above shows this breakdown automatically.
